For those who are old enough to remember the original Star Trek television series, there was an opening sequence to the show each week that recited the mission of the Starship Enterprise. The line that I remember is this, “…to boldly go where no one has gone before…” Don’t you just love that line?!
Bold.
There was - and is - something about the word “bold” that is inherently linked to leadership.
So I looked up the definition in the online Merriam-Webster free dictionary and this is how it is defined:
bold/bōld/Adjective: (of a person, action, or idea) Showing an ability to take risks; confident and courageous.
Synonyms: daring - audacious - brave - courageous – hardy
There is simply no doubt that exercising leadership requires boldness – in every sense of the meaning described above.
With this in mind, we can each ask ourselves the question, “In what way do I need to take bold action…in my life, in my career, in my relationships?”
I remind myself that bold does not mean brash. Confident and courageous action can be taken with a gentle spirit of resolve. And still be bold.
So let’s be bold. Let’s ask the questions: What am I facing this week? What will it mean to be a bold leader?
Let’s hit the trail today renewing our strength as bold leaders; daring, brave, courageous – hardy.
